CBD in Switzerland: challenges and prospects
The cannabidiol industry in Switzerland is growing fast - one of the fastest in Europe. And although statistics are lacking, Swiss CBD is highly prized for its quality and efficacy.
Legislation currently prohibits CBD-based edibles in Switzerland. However, the 1% THC permitted in these products means that the Swiss market offers a wide variety of products. Whether it's flowers, oils or other by-products, customers can benefit from a wide range of choices. Unfortunately, this is not the case in other European countries such as France, where all CBD products must have a maximum of 0% THC to be legally marketed.
Unlike our beloved European neighbors, Switzerland is a very attractive country for cannabis and CBD companies wishing to enter the market. A Swiss-based company can not only use industrial hemp, but also different varieties of cannabis with low THC concentrations. This of course means greater choice in terms of raw materials and the products derived from them.
Buying CBD in Switzerland, thanks in particular to e-commerce, has become quick and easy. You can find CBD in specialized stores in most cities, but also in many other outlets such as gas stations, kiosks or grocery stores/supermarkets. And of course there are many online CBD stores like Naturalpesto order from home.
Why has Switzerland become a key player in the CBD market? This is mainly due to the country's progressive laws: Switzerland recognizes the benefits of CBD, and it is also possible for a doctor to prescribe medicines containing cannabis. As far as prescription drugs are concerned, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health explains that they are mainly used in medical practice to treat chronic pain, loss of appetite and nausea during chemotherapy, or spasticity or cramps caused by certain neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
There's also the aspect of product quality: the more cannabis plants mature, the higher the cannabinoid concentrations. A plant that reaches a THC concentration of 1% will therefore have higher levels of other cannabinoids, such as CBD. This higher concentration is reflected in the extracts produced, making CBD oils, for example, more effective than those extracted from plants with lower THC content. Swiss CBD users therefore have access to products, whether oils or flowers, that are far more effective than their European counterparts.
Beware of misleading advertising when buying cannabis products. In fact, some companies do not hesitate to present their CBD products in a certain way to lead the customer to believe that they are Swiss products. But this is not always the case.
So, as a consumer, how can you be sure of a product's origin? Swiss products are labelled "Swiss Made" or "Made in Switzerland", and extracts must be manufactured in Swiss laboratories. If in doubt, simply ask Customer Service about the place of production and the laboratory where the raw materials are extracted and processed.
