In 2012, Switzerland decided to impose a more flexible legalization on cannabis. Previously perceived as an entirely illegal plant, the confederation then chose to no longer consider possession of less than 10 grams of hemp a criminal offence.
Subsequently, in 2016, the country further relaxed the law, making it legal to consume, grow and sell cannabis, as long as it contains less than 1% THC (the main cannabinoid with psychotropic effects found in weed).
Thanks to this new legislation, many entrepreneurs have decided to get into the business, with the result that the number of declared manufacturers and distributors has risen from 5 in 2017 to 600 in 2018.
The first company to enter the market was BioCan, founded in 2015. Its principal founder, Markus Walther, was already thinking of exploiting the virtues of CBD (a cannabinoid with relaxing but non-psychotropic effects) in 2000. He seized his chance in 2008, when the acceptable THC content in cannabis was raised from 0.3 to 1%. So, together with his colleague Dario Tobler, he spent many years crossing hemp plants, before finally obtaining a plant containing less than 1% THC. Following this success, the two men set up their company in 2015 and began marketing the fruits of their labor in August 2016, thanks to their collaboration with the authorities and the advent of their CPure brand.
CPure is a BioCan invention that complies fully with Swiss standards. The brand offers numerous products whose plants are harvested in the company's various greenhouses across the country. It was the first legal hemp label to sell in 2016, and has inspired multiple companies to get into the therapeutic cannabis business. These include Naturalpes which, like CPure, offers a varied range of herbs and oils with relaxing and restorative properties, etc... but always without psychotropic or "high" effects. These products continue to interest and seduce more and more individuals who wish to relieve their pain in a more natural way, without having to resort to the usual treatments.
The success of these companies is unequivocal: growing demand and increasingly diversified products (oils, creams, capsules, etc.) continue to convince and seem to work on a large majority of their users.
Even in their wildest dreams, Dario and Markus never imagined that legal cannabis would make such a big splash, and that the number of enthusiasts would be so large. Today, BioCan supplies dozens of stores across Switzerland with cannabis-derived products and, following the example of Naturalpes and its online shop , the company is continually looking to develop new concepts under the CPure label, such as culinary aromas to spice up your pasta sauce.
While the success of these companies is no longer in question, they are constantly looking ahead to new projects, such as tablets, cosmetics, textiles, paper and even hemp concrete. Exploiting all the virtues of CBD is a mission these entrepreneurs have set themselves, and it looks like they're well on the way to achieving it.
