More than 100. That’s the number of phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Among them are cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and about a hundred others, such as CBN, CBC, and CBG. But let’s get back to the basics: what is CBD used for?
In the medical study Antioxidative and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Cannabidiolpublished in December 2019, researchers explain that CBD is "one of the most active phytocannabinoids derived from Cannabis sativa". It has, according to its authors, "no psychoactive effects but has multiple positive effects, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties."
To understand the potential of cannabidiol on the body, we must first bear in mind that every individual possesses an endocannabinoid system. Among other things, this system regulates numerous physiological functions on which THC-free CBD can act without causing psychotropic effects. Among other things, it regulates
- memory,
- desire, motivation,
- cardiac functions,
- pain,
- and the immune system.
Phytocannabinoids interact with this endocannabinoid system. A 2019 study on THC-free CBD oil explored these interactions and their effects in depth. Extraction: the key to THC-free quality products
The extraction process plays a fundamental role, as it is this stage that produces a quality product containing the maximum number of components. How to achieve quality and eliminate THC?
1) First, the cannabinoids must be extracted from the plants using one of three extraction techniques:
- using ethanol (the simplest method, which enables large quantities to be processed, but requires proper extraction of the solvents, which is rarely carried out according to the rules of the art),
- in macerates, this limits cbd levels in finished products)
- or using CO₂ (the plants are passed through CO₂ gas for ten hours; this is the most expensive and complex method, but the one that yields cannabidiol oil of exceptional purity).
2) Once the plant has been extracted, it is heated and purified.
3) Finally, fractional distillation is carried out to concentrate the cannabinoids and enable the final stage: the THC removal process.
4) This THC removal process is carried out using flash chromatography. Based on the interaction between the components you wish to separate, this technique makes it possible to isolate components and obtain a pure sample. This is how THC-free CBD can be produced, while retaining all the other beneficial cannabinoids. Once this process has been carried out, the resulting distillate contains all the cannabinoids except THC.
Focus on sports
As we've seen, the endocannabinoid system regulates concentration, physical ability, motivation... in short, many benefits for athletes.
